Vitamin D is important for healthy bones but it is also necessary for maintaining a healthy immune system. New research is showing that low vitamin D levels may be related to higher rates of, cardiovascular disease, asthma, cancers, allergies, autoimmune diseases, and both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Sun exposure is how most people get the bulk of their vitamin D requirement, though many factors may interfere with adequate absorption, and supplements may be required.

Vitamin D can be checked with a simple 25-hydroxy-vitamin D test.
