Carl is an 82-year-old who is in good physical health and has been eating a vegan diet for over 40 years. Carl is a very active senior involved in numerous activities such as aqua aerobics, attending weekly game and movie nights, volunteering at his local church, and joining a senior group for travel once a year.
However, lately Carl has noticed that he bruises easily while going about his normal day and activities. At Carl’s routine physical, his doctor recommended an Organix Comprehensive Profile along with his yearly Cardiovascular Health Profile.
In reviewing Carl’s test results, his doctor noticed an extremely elevated 8-Hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-oh2-dg), well above the 95th percentile.
Carl’s results also showed he had low total cholesterol, low HDL, and elevated fibrinogen.
8-OHdG is a metabolic by-product of oxidative damage by hydroxyl radicals to the guanine bases of DNA, which has the lowest oxidation potential of the four bases. Urinary assessment correlates with the rate of DNA damage and repair, and is a stable product not subject to further metabolism. 8-OHdG has been used as an assessment of oxidative damage, toxic exposure, H pylori, cancer, ALS, and diabetes. It has also been used as an assessment when evaluating the possible beneficial treatment effects of calcium channel blockers, treatments for hypertension, cancer treatment, and dietary interventions.
Since Carl is already on a diet that supplied significant sources of phytonutrients and antioxidants, his doctor recommend he add herbal teas, curcumin, and sources of dietary antioxidants, like tomato paste, to his diet. Another recommendation is to add saunas for detoxification purposes.
At Carl’s six-month recheck, he reported that his bruising had disappeared. His follow-up test results showed that his 8-Hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine dropped significantly, to below the 95th percentile.
Carl’s lipids and inflammatory markers improved significantly as well. The lipids came back up to his normal levels, and his inflammation, as identified from his fibrinogen, decreased significantly.
